Police Charge Man in April 2nd Shooting at Lane College
Jackson police have arrested and charged, Jimtarius Hampton, 19, of Memphis, in a shooting last Thursday at Lane College.
Hampton is in custody at the Madison County Jail and is scheduled to be formally arraigned at 8 a.m. Wednesday in Jackson City Court on charges of aggravated assault, reckless endangerment with a deadly weapon and possession of a weapon on school property.
Around 11:15 a.m. on April 2, officers responded to a report of shots fired on Lane’s campus near Orchard Street and Laconte Street. Officers found a 20-year-old man near the cafeteria with a gunshot wound to the thigh. The shooting victim was identified as a Lane student.
With the assistance of Lane College staff, police investigators developed Jimtarius Hampton as a person of interest. The investigation determined that Hampton, who was a student on the day of the shooting, shot a handgun while he was near a crowd of people. A bullet struck the victim causing a serious injury.
Officers arrested Hampton last night in Jackson and transported him to the Madison County Jail.
