Indianapolis – The Indiana State Police held an awards and recognition ceremony late last week that publicly recognized the achievements and deeds of self sacrifice and accomplishments that all too often go without the proper recognition. Ninety employees of the Indiana State Police, from around the state, were honored for their dedication to service, bravery and devotion to the department and the citizens of Indiana.
Bloomington Trooper William E. Brown was recognized at the ceremony where he was proclaimed publicly to be deserving of praise and respect for his extraordinary conduct in a lifesaving effort.
On June 25, 2014, Trooper William Brown was assisting with 4-H activities at the Community Center in Freedom, Indiana. Various activities were being conducted for many children and at one point during the activities, one of the children began choking on a piece of watermelon. The child was outside the Community Center building and came inside looking for help. Trooper Brown, who was off duty and attending the event with his family, was alerted by others that a child was choking and in need of assistance.
Without hesitation, Trooper Brown went to the aid of the child who at the time was not breathing or making any noise. Trooper Brown began performing the Heimlich maneuver on the child and he slowly began making verbal choking noises. Knowing there was some air movement for the child at that point Trooper Brown took the opportunity to radio fire department personnel for medical assistance. After contacting medical personnel, Trooper Brown continued to perform Heimlich thrusts and was eventually successful in dislodging the food from the child’s throat.
Trooper Brown continued to monitor the child after the item was dislodged for several minutes until the child regained and sustained a normal breathing pattern. Owen County Emergency Medical Services arrived and checked the child’s status and determined the child did not need to be transported for any further type of evaluation. The child was then able to continue playing with the other children in attendance.
For his actions, Trooper Brown was commended for his extraordinary conduct in saving the life of a fellow human being.
“This life saving event represents what the Indiana State Police do every day. Trooper Brown is a fine example of all the employees at the Bloomington Post.” stated Lt. Paul Bucher, Commander of the Bloomington Post. “I am proud to work with them.”
