Kids Design the New Playground Coming to Simms Park this Summer
WHAT:
The City of Bellflower will be hosting a Kids Design Day to let kids from Bellflower put crayons to paper and draw their dream playground, which will ultimately become a reality with help from JetBlue and organizers from the national non-profit KaBOOM! Elements from their drawings will be incorporated into the design of the playground that will be built this summer at John S. Simms Park. WHY:
A playground is more than a playground. It’s a brain-expander, friend-maker, and muscle-builder. Play is central to a child’s ability to grow into a productive adult. It can transform children from sedentary, bored and solitary to physically, mentally and socially active. KaBOOM! works to bring balanced and active play into the daily lives of all kids, particularly those growing up in poverty in America. We do this by creating great places to play, inspiring communities to promote and support play and driving the national discussion about the importance of play in fostering healthy and productive lives.
“The City of Bellflower understands that kids in our community need to be active and need places that allow them to do what they do best – play their hearts out – and we are proud to welcome KaBOOM! and JetBlue to help us build this new playground for our community,” said Mayor Scott Larsen. The new playground will bring more than 17,000 kids in Bellflower one step closer to having the childhood they deserve. Currently, the City of Bellflower offers a wide range of opportunities for children to play, including nine playgrounds; opportunities for aquatics, sports, arts and crafts and special interest activities; open spaces to play; walking and bike trails; and many special events throughout the year.
JetBlue supports KaBOOM! in promoting and protecting a child’s right to active play at home, at school and in the community. Through this partnership, more kids will have the play-filled childhood they deserve.
