Each year, more than two million people are victims of domestic violence, and one million children are physically abused.  Domestic violence knows no socioeconomic boundaries.  It is one of the most emotionally and physically destructive crimes facing our society.  Violence in the home should not be tolerated.  Too many victims are emotionally and physically abused by their partners, spouses, or family members.  For many children, the home is a place of terror and the damaging effects of domestic violence are profound.  Children raised in violent homes are more likely to become juvenile delinquents and adult criminals.

We at the Sheriff’s Department ask that you help break the cycle of violence by stepping in to protect family, friends, and neighbors.  Often reporting an incident is the first step in intervention, and may in fact prevent future acts of violence.

Here are some simple suggestions:

• Call your local Sheriff’s Station or the local police department if you see or hear evidence of domestic violence.
• Be supportive of friends or family members who may be in an abusive relationships.
• Volunteer at a local domestic violence shelter or other organization that helps survivors or works to prevent violence.
• Raise children to respect others. Teach children to treat others as they would like to be treated.
• Mentor our youth.  Get involved in programs that teach young people to solve problems without violence. Get involved with programs that teach teens about healthy relationships.

The Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office has an established countywide Domestic Violence Hotline: 1-800-978-3600. 

The District Attorney's Victim-Witness Assistance Program assists victims of domestic violence.  They have advocates to provide court support, referrals for counseling, and can assist in locating an appropriate shelter if needed. **
