Text to 911 Implemented in Erie County
Texting to 911 is now available in Erie County, however, remember IT IS ALWAYS BETTER TO MAKE A VOICE CALL TO 9-1-1. Text to 911 calls should only be made when voice calls are not an option. Text to 911 calls is intended for use in two emergency scenarios: for those who are hearing or speech impaired and for those unable to make a voice call. A couple points to remember:
1. cell phone must be within range of a tower serving Erie County
2. 9-1-1 cannot receive texted pictures or videos
3. a text or data plan is required
4. text to 911 is not available if you are roaming
5. DO NOT TEXT & DRIVE
How to text 9-1-1-1 in an emergency:
1. enter "911" in the To field
2. the 1st text should be brief containing the location and type of emergency and try to keep all succeeding texts brief
3. push send button

REMEMBER: MAKING A VOICE CALL 9-1-1 IS STILL THE FASTEST, MOST EFFICIENT WAY TO REACH EMERGENCY HELP.
