Board of Water Supply Valve Replacement Project in Kailua Starts April 27

Beginning Monday April 27, 2015, a Board of Water Supply (BWS) contractor will begin work to re-align a portion of an eight-inch waterline and to proactively replace an important valve that regulates water pressure to a portion of Windward Oahu. Work for the project will take place at the triangle park near the Castle Medical Center at the intersection of Kailua Road and Ulukahiki Street.

Working hours for the project will be Monday to Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Construction activities will involve excavating and removing the existing underground valve, then raising the waterline connection to make the new valve more accessible and easier to maintain.

The majority of the work for the project will be contained within the triangle park and will not affect vehicular traffic. However, lane closures may be implemented as the project progresses. Motorists and pedestrians traveling near the construction area are asked to please exercise caution and to abide by posted signs. The project will not obstruct any crosswalks, sidewalks, or other designated pedestrian walkways and will not restrict access to the Castle Medical Center parking lot or any other nearby lots.

Barring any unforeseen circumstances, the project is expected to be completed in October 2015. The waterline and pressure regulating valve were originally installed in 1971.

Questions and comments may be directed to the BWS Construction Section at 748-5730, the BWS Communications Office at 748-5041, or via email at [email protected].

The BWS strives to balance the need to replace aging infrastructure with affordable rates for its customers. Revenue from water rates fund the maintenance and replacement of Oahu’s aging water infrastructure, meet the BWS’s operational requirements, and ensure customers will have water whenever they turn on their taps. The funding will facilitate proactive pipeline replacement projects, such as this one, to minimize water main breaks and is also used to renew the BWS’s pumps, reservoirs, and treatment plants.
