Lake Lure Police Department Corporal receives Prestigious Region C Award

Lake Lure Police Department Corporal receives Prestigious Region C Award

“Above and Beyond” would describe the quality of work that Corporal Carl Umphlett performs with the Lake Lure Police Department and he’s done so for several years now. Being the recipient of the Region C Award is a wonderful achievement for any officer, and for Corporal Umphlett, an incredible acknowledgment of a job well done.

In August of 2014 Corporal Umphlett received a call in reference to a welfare check on an area resident who suffers from mild dementia. Upon investigation of the incident, the home, and in speaking with the wife, it was discovered that the male subject had left in his vehicle to travel to his sister’s home in Pennsylvania. The subject had never arrived and all attempts to reach him were to no avail.
Corporal Umphlett initiated a Silver Alert for the subject. After the subject’s wife discovered their credit card had been used in Henry County Indiana, Corporal Umphlett located the location of the credit card use and discovered it to be a hotel and further discovered the subject to be registered there. When the hotel staff checked the room, no one came to the door. Corporal Umphlett then notified the Henry County Sheriff’s Department and requested that a deputy go to the room at the hotel. A Deputy was dispatched and found the subject in the room. The subject was disoriented and EMS was dispatched.

Through further efforts between Corporal Umphlett and the Sheriff’s Department, the subject was reunited with his sister in Pennsylvania.

Due to the quickness of Corporal Umphlett’s determination to find our missing resident, the Silver Alert was still in the process of being completed, and thereby never issued. Corporal Umphlett took time and made those necessary extra steps for the safety and welfare of someone he had never met. That extra step, has led to a wonderful friendship with appreciation for an officer that went above and beyond.

A SILVER ALERT is a public notification system to broadcast information about missing persons – especially seniors with Alzheimer’s Disease, dementia or other mental disabilities – in order to aid in their return.
