Advisory

The Columbia Township Police Department is investigating a domestic related felonious assault and home invasion.

The Columbia Township Police Department is currently investigating a domestic related felonious assault and home invasion that occurred on McKinney Road in Columbia Township on Saturday, May 2, 2015 at approximately 10:00 A.M. This original incident was first reported on Sunday, May 3, 2015, at approximately 6:42 P.M., and had been ongoing since the prior day.

The victim, a 40 year old female resident of Columbia Township, reported that the 41 year-old male suspect (unknown permanent address in Jackson County), had forced his way into her home and threatened her with a knife. The victim sustained a laceration to her leg from the knife. They had been in a long-term relationship, which had ended approximately 2 years prior.

The suspect eventually left and returned several times. Due to prior threats from the suspect, the victim was afraid to call 911, and the suspect eventually took the victim’s phone. After leaving the home on McKinney, the suspect continued to stalk the victim and one of her children on Sunday, May 3, 2015, again returning to the house several times, threatening to kill her.

The victim (and the one child home at the time) were able leave and go to a friend’s house in Norvell Township, where they called 911, and Columbia Township Police were dispatched. Officer Rodden was able to determine what the suspect’s vehicle was, and broadcast the information. The unoccupied vehicle was located by Sergeant Shepard of the Jackson County Sheriff’s Department, at M-50 and Clarklake Road in Napoleon Township, unoccupied. It was impounded.

Officer Rodden continued to investigate and make contact with friends and family of the victim and suspect, and was eventually able to determine a vehicle description that the suspect was traveling the area in, as a passenger. Jackson County 911 dispatchers were able to assist in disseminating recent locations the suspect had been to throughout the night, and they continued to broadcast that information to local officers and deputies on patrol.

At approximately 11:30 P.M. on Sunday, May 3, 2015, Sergeant Anthony Shepard spotted the vehicle the suspect was believed to be in, near Francis and South Streets, and eventually stopped the vehicle and took the suspect into custody.

The suspect was lodged at the Jackson County Jail, and on Monday morning, May 4, the report was forwarded to the Jackson County Prosecutor’s office for issuance of charges. At approximately 3:00 P.M. on Monday May 4, the suspect was charged with 1st degree Home Invasion, a 20 year felony; Aggravated Stalking, a 5 year felony; and Assault with a Dangerous Weapon (Felonious Assault), a 4 year felony.

He is scheduled for arraignment on Tuesday, May 5, at which time his name will be released.
