Cinco de Mayo's Impaired Driver Task Force rounds up 16 drivers under the influence in one night!

Los Angeles - California Highway Patrol Officers gathered together for a common goal: Removing impaired drivers from the road.

Cinco de Mayo's Impaired Driver Task Force was comprised of 26 officers, whom are highly skilled in alcohol and drug influence detection. Their primary goal is to seek out and arrest drivers who are under the influence.

Officers focused their efforts in the East Los Angeles area where they were able to arrest multiple impaired drivers and prevent loss of life and property damage.

The task force was very effective and resulted in several arrests and citations:

• 16 DUI Arrests
• 7 Traffic Citations
• 200 Verbal Warnings
• 11 Impounded Vehicles
• 2 Disabled Motorists assisted

Officers not only arrested impaired drivers, but they issued citations and plenty of verbal warnings to drivers who may have been driving in a way that may have looked like someone was driving under the influence.

Officers routinely hear several reasons why drivers may have been swerving back and forth within their lane, appearing to be an impaired driver.

• Texting
• Using your cell phone or smartphone
• Eating and drinking
• Talking to passengers
• Grooming
• Reading, including maps
• Using a navigation system
• Watching a video
• Adjusting a radio, CD player, or MP3 player

Because text messaging requires visual, manual, and cognitive attention from the driver, it is by far the most alarming distraction and the most common reason heard by officers.

Every single traffic stop is an opportunity to educate our motoring public. Officers utilize verbal warnings as a means of education as well as an enforcement tool.

Our message is simple: Don't drink and drive, leave your phone alone while driving, check your emotional state before driving away and drive with a regard for your life and the life of others.

The California Highway Patrol will continue to saturate Los Angeles County communities in an effort to make our streets and highways safe for everyone.
