NEWS MEDIA INFORMATION REPORT
SUBJECT OF RELEASE: Embezzlement and Identity Theft at Local Bank
DATE AND TIME: Thursday, May 14, 2015
LOCATION: Mercantile Bank, Vestaburg Branch, 9002 E Howard City Edmore Road, Richland Township.
The Montcalm County Sheriff's Office conducted an investigation of embezzlement and several cases of identity theft at the Vestaburg Branch of Mercantile Bank that has led to the arrest of an Elwell woman.
Detectives were notified by corporate officials on March 25 that an employee of the bank was suspected of embezzling funds through fraudulent loans. Bank records indicated that Sandra Kay Ebright, over the course of several years, drew up a number of loans in the names of existing customers without their knowledge. Ebright, who was the branch manager, then kept the proceeds for herself and attempted to make payments on the loans in an effort to keep them from being discovered.
Ebright has been charged with one count of embezzlement and seventeen counts of identity theft and her employment was terminated after 31 years of service. She has been arraigned and was lodged in the Montcalm County Jail.
