City of Eustis News Release City of Eustis Names New Police Chief

EUSTIS, Fla. (May 18, 2015) – The City of Eustis is pleased to announce the appointment of Gary Calhoun to the position of police chief. Calhoun will take over as police chief on May 26, 2015.

“Mr. Calhoun is a career public safety professional and public servant,” said Director of Human Resources, Ann Isaacs. “He brings a breadth of experience and leadership to this position. I am certain he will do an outstanding job to protect and serve the citizens of Eustis.”

Calhoun was appointed as police chief by then Acting City Manager, Dianne Kramer, who led the search, and a committee made up of members of the community. Prior to posting of the chief of police position, the City also conducted a community survey to identify experience, personal attributes and characteristics sought in a new police chief.

As chief of police, Calhoun will oversee a staff of 53, including 40 police officers.

Calhoun began his twenty-five-year law enforcement career in Maitland, Fla. in 1984. While in Maitland, Calhoun served as a road patrol officer, investigator, sergeant of investigations, sergeant and lieutenant in the patrol unit and the community policing division and finally, as chief of police from 2003 until retiring in 2009.

Most recently, Calhoun served as the police chief of Madison, Fla. from 2010 through 2014. Calhoun holds a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Criminal Justice from Columbia College, is a graduate of the FBI National Academy and has been designated by the Florida Attorney General’s Office as a Crime Prevention Practitioner. Calhoun was appointed by Governor Scott to serve as one of three police chiefs on the Criminal Justice Standards and Training Commission from 2012 until 2014.

The current Chief of Police, Fred Cobb, announced his retirement in a letter dated Oct. 23, 2014. Cobb came to Lake County in March 2004 to serve as the county’s interim sheriff and became the police chief for
Eustis on Jan. 4, 2005. Cobb will retire from the Eustis Police Department on July 6.
