Parks Bureau Hosts 5th Annual Basketball Challenge at George Lane Park
On Saturday, May 16, 2015, the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department Parks Bureau and the Los Angeles County Department of Parks and Recreation held the 5th Annual Basketball Challenge. 50 children, ages 7-14, participated in the skills competition held at George Lane Park, 5520 West Avenue L-8, Quartz Hill. The participants were welcomed by Los Angeles County Supervisor Michael D. Antonovich’s Field Deputy Norm Hickling, Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Commander Henry Romero and Parks Bureau Captain Holly Perez as well as Los Angeles County Parks and Recreation Regional Recreation Director Gary Dickerson. First, second and third place trophies were awarded in each division. The participants were each given a t-shirt and treated to sodas, hot dogs, popcorn, chips, cake and cookies. There were many raffle prizes that were donated by local businesses and given to those lucky enough to have their number drawn. Deputy Chris Deaville, who coordinates this annual event, said that this event only happens with the support of Supervisor Michael D. Antonovich and the assistance of the community. Contributors such as Antelope Valley Ford and Antelope Valley Chevrolet, Coca-Cola Distributors, Der Wienerschnitzel, In-n-Out Burgers, Shakeys Pizza, Mulligan’s Family Fun Center and other local businesses make this event possible. Parents of many of the participants commented on the great time they and their children had and how they’re looking forward to participating next year.
