TURNPIKE ROAD RECONSTRUCTION PROJECT READY TO BEGIN
Construction scheduled to start next week

PORTSMOUTH – A project to provide more capacity and increase safety along Turnpike Road is scheduled to start construction on Monday June 1, 2015. Contract crews for the Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) will be adding one additional lane in each direction to the existing two-lane road, with a 12-foot center median turn lane.

Signed detours will be in place during construction, which will allow the travelling public to reach their designated locations on Turnpike Road. During Phase I, portions of County Street, Turnpike Road and Constitution Avenue will be closed and detoured onto High Street. They are:

Closed: County Street between Jamestown Avenue and Harbor Drive
Closed: Turnpike Road between Meander Road and Constitution Avenue
Closed: Constitution Avenue between Meander Road and King Street
***All Traffic will be detoured onto High Street***

E.V. Williams, Inc. was awarded the $23.4 million contract for the new four-lane divided roadway in March 2015. The project will continue over the next 30 months, with completion scheduled for May 2018.
