LAPD Topanga Detectives warn of burglary trend on homes undergoing remodel:

Between May 15, 2015 to May 26, 2015, within LAPD's Topanga Division, there have been four residential burglaries on homes undergoing a remodel.  Among the property taken, have been construction tools and appliances. 

Topanga Detectives would like to remind home owners to keep the following in mind when undergoing, or preparing to undergo, any type of remodel at their homes:

1. Do not tell anyone you are not staying at the residence during the remodel - In one of the burglaries that occurred, the homeowner told the delivery company that no one was staying at the residence; the following day the home had been burglarized, and all of the appliances taken.
 
2. Politely decline a request from the construction company to put a sign in the yard or a banner on the house, advertising the company and the work they do. - While this is helpful advertising for the company, it sends a sign to would be criminals that the residence may not be as secure as it would otherwise be.  
 
3. Consider surveillance video inside and out. Consider leaving lights on, etc. if the residence has electricity.
 
4. Check the residence on a daily basis, several times a day if necessary, if leaving the residence vacant. Have friends and family check on it too.
