On Monday, June 8, 2015, Corona Police Department employees and their families will participate in the Law Enforcement’s Special Olympics Torch Run. The runners will be receiving the torch from the Riverside County Sheriff’s Department at Hidden Valley Parkway and Hamner Avenue. Corona employees will run eastbound on Parkridge Avenue, to eastbound Cresta Avenue, and then to the area of Promenade and Bentley, where the Riverside Police Department will pick it up the following day. The anticipated handoff time, is approximately 6 p.m.

During the latter part of May and the first part of June 2015, more than 4,000 officers from various agencies along with Special Olympics athletes are proudly running 1,500 miles. They will travel through 200 different communities with the torch to raise awareness and funds for the Special Olympics Southern California.

The run is made up of three main legs (north, central, south) and a dozen smaller legs. All legs will convene on July 25, 2015 at the Summer Games Championships, where they will unite into a single flame. The Games are being held at the historic Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum. A Special Olympics athlete and an officer will then carry a single torch into the Opening Ceremony to symbolize the start of the 2015 Special Olympics World Games.

The City of Corona will also be a Special Olympics Host Town for the Delegations from Iran and Slovakia! The city in conjunction with CNUSD and ABC Hopes Inc. will welcome the Special Olympic athletes and coaches and provide them with food housing and entertainment.
