GCSO Sheriff Jim Arnott announces retirement of K9 Dar, GCSO's first police service dog
In 2010, the Greene County Sheriff's Office added the first four-legged Deputy into the Patrol Division, a 3-year old Belgian Malinois named Dar. K9 Dar will be retiring on Thursday, June 4, 2015 after providing over 5,000 hours of service and 1,300 hours of training to the GCSO.
In his career, K9 Dar has assisted in locating narcotics and suspects. In November 2013, K9 Dar assisted in apprehending two suspects burglarizing a home in southeast Greene County. In December 2013, he assisted the Christian County Sheriff's Office in apprehending a male suspect hiding underneath a home after fleeing from a pursuit. As recently as February 2015, K9 Dar assisted the apprehension of a suspect found burglarizing a car wash in southwest Greene County.
Starting in 2013, K9 Dar started having medical difficulties and experienced two seizures which has required him to take medication to reduce the risk of additional seizures. Unfortunately, K9 Dar has also been placed on medical leave several times within the past year and a half due to joint-related injuries.
"It is a bittersweet moment for the Greene County Sheriff's Office," states Sheriff Jim Arnott. "K9 Dar has dedicated thousands of hours of service to the GCSO and, just like our Deputies, he placed his life in danger to protect our citizens every day he came to work. K9 Dar and his handler always gave 110%. We hope K9 Dar will be able to enjoy a relaxed life in his retirement - he has earned it!"
