Andre Bryant, a 20 year old, male, Black, of Victorville, was arrested on June 4th, 2015 by LASD Transit Bureau South deputies after he had assaulted a man, unprovoked, on an Eastbound Metro Green Line train, and then attempted to rob a woman at the Metro Willowbrook Green Line Station. The crime occurred at approximately 9:30 AM. Bryant may have gotten away, had it not been for the heroic efforts of an astute Metro maintenance employee.
Lawrence Sears, who works as a Metro General Services employee assigned to the Metro Green and Blue Lines, saw the female victim in distress when Bryant was attempting to take her purse. When the woman would not let go, Bryant began to hit her in the head. Mr. Sears, who was working nearby, quickly tackled Bryant. Bryant was able to get up and began fighting with Mr. Sears. That’s when Transit Bureau South Deputy Chris Figueroa, who was also in the vicinity, arrived and was able to gain control of Bryant and take him into custody.
Deputies later learned that Bryant had earlier caused a disturbance on a Metro Green Line train, and when a man sitting nearby attempted to retrieve his bicycle and disembark at the Willowbrook Station, Bryant began hitting him, causing a gash to the male victim’s head.
Mr. Sears and the male victim with the head injury, were transported to the hospital with non-life threatening injuries. The female victim refused medical treatment. Suspect Bryant was transported to the hospital by deputies and then released for booking at the Century Regional Detention Facility in Lynwood. Bryant was charged this morning with Battery on a Transit Employee/Patron (243.3 PC), Assault that is likely to produce Great Bodily Injury (245(A)(4) PC), and Attempted Robbery (664/211 PC). New Metro Chief Executive Officer, Phil Washington, was rightfully proud upon hearing of his employee’s actions to aid a Metro rider in distress. Mr. Washington said, “This is seeing something and doing something”.
