Montgomery County-Yesterday at approximately 11:20 p.m. on I-74 EB near the 28 MM (that is three miles east of the 25 mm/exit 25), a pickup driver and a semi driver got into an altercation where shots were fired with one going to jail.
Preliminary investigation by Trooper Alaina Zloty and Trooper Detective Stephen Buckley of ISP Field Investigations out of the Lafayette Post has revealed that a white 2014 International leased to Quality Carriers INC out of Joliet, IL and driven by Mark D. White, 56 of Carrollton, OH was EB on I-74 entering the construction zone. At this point, the interstate goes from two lanes to one lane of traffic in each direction. As White was entering the construction zone he had to merge into the left lane. As he was changing lanes from the right to merge into the left lane, a black 2014 Chevrolet Silverado pickup driven by Randall L. Robertson, 50 of Elwood, IN passed on the right and then allegedly started to slow down after clearing White’s International.
As they approached the 27 MM, Robertson allegedly slammed on his brakes in front of White. White was not able to get his rig stopped and bumped the rear of Robertson’s pickup. Both vehicles continued east for about one mile when Robertson again allegedly slammed on the brakes coming to a stop. White was not able to get stopped again and rear ended the pickup. Robertson exited his vehicle and a verbal altercation between the two drivers ensued. After a short conversation, Robertson allegedly pulled a gun and fired several shots at White’s semi.
White made a 911 call and when Robertson returned to his vehicle, he made a 911 call. Shortly after police arrived, Robertson was arrested for Criminal Recklessness with a Deadly Weapon a Level 6 Felony and booked into the Montgomery County Jail. No other citations or arrests have been made but the case is still under investigation. Assisting at the scene was the Montgomery County Sheriff’s Department.
