Lindenwold Police Officer’s Association Presents 2015 Patrolman Hugh Shannon Memorial Scholarship to Lindenwold High School Senior

On Wednesday, June 10, 2015, The Lindenwold Police Officer’s Association awarded Lindenwold High School Senior Katherine Stephanie Cortez the 2015 Patrolman Hugh Shannon Memorial Scholarship. The Scholarship was presented by Chief Brennan during Lindenwold High School’s Annual Awards Ceremony. The Scholarship is awarded to a Lindenwold High School Senior who has achieved a minimum 3.0 GPA and who will be entering into a Criminal Justice Program in the State of New Jersey. The Scholarship was recently created by the Lindenwold Police Officer’s Association and Katherine Cortez was the first recipient of the award.

Patrolman Hugh Shannon was killed in the line of duty on December 24, 1946 when he was struck by a motor vehicle on the White Horse Pike while directing traffic in front of St. Lawerence Church after Christmas Eve Mass. Patrolman Shannon was 72 years old at the time he was killed and was a Veteran of the Spanish American War. He was an original member of the Lindenwold Police Department when it was established in 1929. He is the only member of the Lindenwold Police Department to be killed in the line of duty in the 86 year history of the department. In 2012 Patrolman Hugh Shannon’s name was carved into the National Law Enforcement Officer’s Memorial in Washington D.C. during the Police Week Ceremony. Relatives of Patrolman Shannon were in attendance the Lindenwold High School Awards Ceremony to witness the presentation of the Scholarship.

The Lindenwold Police Department would like to congratulate Katherine Stephanie Cortez on being awarded the scholarship as well as the rest of her excellent academic achievements. We wish her the best of luck in her collegiate studies.
