PREVENT BURGLARIES ~ EMPTY YOUR TILLS TO SAVE YOUR BILLS

PREVENT BURGLARIES ~ EMPTY YOUR TILLS TO SAVE YOUR BILLS

Police officers from LAPD's West Valley station noted a recent trend in window-smash burglaries, especially at hair and nail salons along Ventura Boulevard, and they have a simple suggestion for all store owners: leave the cash register tills empty and the register drawer visibly open.

"We're saying, Empty your tills to save your bills," explained Officer Damon Ormsby, a crime analyst at West Valley Police Station.

Most of the window smashes occur when burglars can see a cash register from the street. "If it's closed, they assume it has money in it," explained Ormsby. "Leaving it empty, open, with the till out and upside down, makes it clear there's nothing here for the taking."

Chances are the crooks will go somewhere else where the store was not as cautious.

Keeping the burglar from entering the store in the first place often saves proprietors more money than the potential loss of cash. "That's why leaving the register open is so important. When they see a closed register they hope for cash, and they'll bust the window and the register to find out; all for nothing," Ormsby explained.
