Emergency Management Staff Planning Flood Mitigation Efforts
As a result of Tropical Depression Bill heavy amounts of rain fell within the Grapevine Lake watershed on June 17, causing water levels to rise rapidly. This has substantially increased the amount of water discharging over the spillway, which has the potential to impact infrastructure within the Town, including FM 2499. At this time, southbound FM 2499 is closed from Gerault Road to Grapevine Mills Boulevard. It is likely that all lanes of FM 2499 will become impassable, therefore closed indefinitely, as water levels continue to rise.
Additionally, homes below the flow easement are at risk if forecasted lake levels are accurate.
As a result of this on Thursday, June 17 Flower Mound Mayor Tom Hayden signed a Declaration of Disaster Proclamation and Mandatory Evacuation Order. Although at this time, no mandatory evacuations are anticipated, this order allows emergency responders to evacuate residents as public safety and welfare dictate.
Although Grapevine Lake received a substantial amount of precipitation throughout the month of May, yesterday’s rainfall inundated the already saturated watershed, which spans for hundreds of square-miles northwest of Flower Mound, with anywhere from 4 to 10 inches of rain in less than 48-hours.
Conditions may continue to change rapidly; the Town of Flower Mound will keep residents updated as new information becomes available.
