Child Safety Seat Check and Installation Event, with Bicycle Safety Outreach
The Los Banos Police Department and the California Highway Patrol will be conducting child safety seat inspections on June 26, 2015 in the parking lot of 1301 W. Pacheco Boulevard between the hours of 8:00 a.m. and 12:00 p.m. Each car seat will be inspected for proper installation, fit for the child, and checked for recalls.
“While working vehicle collisions, officers have witnessed firsthand the difference a properly used safety seat can make, and we recognize that many of the injuries suffered through improper or lack of a safety seat are preventable. This event provides an opportunity for the public to learn about car seat safety and installation which could help save a child’s life.”
- Christopher Borchardt, Police Officer
Surveys have shown that car seats are commonly installed improperly and/or are not the proper size for the age and weight of the child. Our goal is to educate parents and keep the children safe. A limited number of child safety seats will be available to families who are unable to purchase adequate car seats. Funding for this event was provided through a grant from First 5 Merced County, and among those personnel working the event are certified Child Safety Technicians who have completed the course provided by Safe Kids Worldwide.
“We have plenty of car seats available, and I encourage everyone in need of a car seat or new upgrade to stop by and see our team. We are thankful to First Five of Merced County for providing the grant funding for this event.”
- Jason Hedden, Police Commander
Additionally, Los Banos Police Department and the California Highway Patrol personnel will be at the event conducting outreach regarding proper bicycle safety. Community members with questions regarding proper bicycle safety equipment or complying with the bicycle safety laws set forth in the California Vehicle Code may speak with Officers.
Officers, parents, and juveniles all acknowledge the impact on personal safety proper bicycle protective gear has. Furthermore, the adherence to the current bicycle laws is for the safety of cyclist and motorist alike. Although the laws regarding bicyclists are commonly misunderstood or unknown, this event is intended to help community members better understand proper bicycle safety.
