New Scam Targeting the elderly: variation of grandchild in trouble scams
***SCAM TARGETING THE ELDERLY***
A resident reported that today he received a phone call from a subject claiming to be a public defender from CT. The caller stated the resident's grandson was in a drunk driving accident in Bridgeport, in which he was at fault. The resident was told he needed to get a Money Gram, at a CVS store, to send $1,875.00 to get the grandson out of jail.
The resident that received a call did realize that this call was a scam. He did say, however, that since his "grandson" was involved, he did panic for a minute. This scam, and many variations thereof, are very common today. They target the elderly, hoping they are not informed about scams and that they may be too embarrassed to report them after the fact.
Please pass the word about these types of scams. The scammer's worst enemy is an informed public. Also, please notify your local law enforcement agency, so we can keep informed as the scams change.
Thank You
