Bluffton, IN. – The Bluffton Police Department announced today the completion of the national and statewide 2015 Click It or Ticket enforcement mobilization campaign. During the annual 17-day enforcement period, 168 tickets were written for lack of seat belt usage within the Bluffton community.

“The importance of seat belt usage cannot be overstated,” said Deputy Chief Kyle Randall. “Ensuring drivers and their occupants understand the risks of not buckling up is a priority we share all across the state. This campaign drives home the message that seat belts save lives, and it’s a message we will continue to spread all year long.”

According to the U.S. Department of Transportation’s National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), in 2014, 87 percent of drivers and passenger across the nation were wearing seat belts. NHTSA statistics show in 2012 alone, seat belts saved an estimated 12, 174 lives nationwide. In Indiana, in 2013, seat belt usage in passenger cars was 91.6 percent.

“The more we increase education around seat belt usage, the more success we see in drivers and passengers buckling up,” said Indiana Criminal Justice Institute Director, Mary Allen. “I want to thank all of the involved agencies for their efforts in working to keep Indiana drivers and passengers safe.”

Click It or Ticket is an annual enforcement effort supported by federal highway safety funding. The Indiana Criminal Justice Institute distributes funding to more than 250 participating Indiana law enforcement agencies.
