7/1/15, press release: accident with injuries
On 7-1-15 at 1410 hours, the Burlington Police Department responded to a vehicle versus bicyclist accident that occurred in the southbound lane of Pine Street at the entrance to the Burlington Department of Public Works (DPW). During a heavy rain storm, Drew Delorme, 32 of Fairfax, was operating a large Burlington Electric Department utility truck with lights flashing, and made a legal right turn into DPW. The bicyclist, Jason Siegel, 41 of Burlington, attempted to pass the truck on the right while disregarding the flashing lights on the vehicle. Siegel impacted the side of the truck as it turned and went underneath, the rear tire of the truck going over his left leg and causing injury. Siegel was transported to the University of Vermont Medical Center and is being treated for the non-life threatening injuries.
Drugs and alcohol were not a factor in the crash.
The Burlington Police Department would like to remind bicyclists to exercise due caution and follow the rules of the road when cycling in an effort to avoid such incidents.
