ARE YOU AND YOUR FAMILY PREPARED FOR AN EMERGENCY? SOME INFORMATION FROM NJOEM TO HELP YOU PREPARE

ARE YOU AND YOUR FAMILY PREPARED FOR AN EMERGENCY? SOME INFORMATION FROM NJOEM TO HELP YOU PREPARE

As we recover from the “Macroburst” Storm and begin to resume our normal daily lives it is a perfect time to evaluate or preparedness for another weather event such as the one we experienced on June 23rd. As we all witnessed the type of destruction that Mother Nature can throw at us occasionally; it is a clear reminder of just how vulnerable we are. We especially learned this lesson as power went out for several days and cell phone communications went down. In today’s technology dependent world we all have come to see just how dependent we have become on these type of communications.

The most important lesson we all have learned from last week’s storm is the importance of planning and preparing for such an emergency. To help NJ residents prepare the NJ Office of Emergency Management (NJOEM) has put together some helpful information on their website to help us prepare. NJOEM encourages all residents to prepare for all emergencies by following the “3 Steps to Safety”. The three steps to safety are as follows:

Step One: “Get a Kit of Emergency Supplies”. The Kit should include the following items:

Items for Your Home:
• Three days' supply of canned, non-perishable, ready-to-eat FOOD
• Three days' supply of WATER (a total of three gallons per family member)
• Battery-operated RADIO and extra batteries
• FLASHLIGHT and extra batteries
• One week's prescription MEDICATIONS
• FIRST AID KIT
• Personal TOILETRIES
• Non-electric CAN OPENER and UTENSILS
• SPECIAL NEEDS items:
o INFANT care items
o Items for ELDERLY family members
o Items for relatives with DISABILITIES
• CASH or TRAVELERS CHECKS
• Store important DOCUMENTS in a waterproof, safe location

In Case You Need To Evacuate:
• Keep your vehicle's gas level at a minimum of half-a-tank.
• Every family member must carry CONTACT INFORMATION:
o All phone numbers at work, school, etc. for every family member
o The name and number of a relative who lives out-of-state, to call in case your family gets separated.

Step 2: “Make a plan” for yourself, your family or your business.

Your plan should include the following information:

Prepare yourself and your family for a disaster by making an emergency plan.
Your emergency planning should also address the care of pets, aiding family members with access and functional needs and safely shutting off utilities.
You may also want to inquire about emergency plans at work, daycare and school. If no plans exist, consider volunteering to help create one.
Once you’ve collected this important information, gather your family members and discuss the information to put in the plan. Practice your plan at least twice a year and update it according to any issues that arise.
You can Download a copy of a sample plan at Family Communication Plan for Parents and Kids (PDF - 1.2 Mb), print the pages and fill them in offline.

Step 3: “Stay Informed” of Possible Threats

It is important to know about the risks that may happen in your community, and to know whether an emergency is imminent or is already taking place.
Contact your local OEM or American Red Cross Chapter.
• Ask which Types of Emergency are most likely in your area, and how to prepare for each.
• Learn about the warning signals that will be used in your community.
• Learn about the local radio and TV stations you should tune into for emergency alerts and official instructions.
Learn about the disaster plans for your Workplace, your children's School or Day Care Center, and Other Places where your family spends time.
Keep track of Current Weather Forecasts and Alerts with:
• Local radio or TV stations
• NOAA Weather Radio - or listen online
• NJOEM's Weather Links
