Sex Registrants Compliance Operation
California law mandates that persons convicted of specified sex crimes register as sex offenders with the local law enforcement agency within the jurisdiction of their residence. Local law enforcement agencies and the California Department of Justice maintain the registration records of these sex offenders. This registration requirement falls under California Penal Code section 290; also referred to as the “Sex Offender Registration Act.” Registered sex offenders are required to update their information every year within five working days of their birthday. Some sex offenders must update more often; transient sex offenders must update every 30 days, and sexually violent predators, every 90 days.
On July 08, 2015, members of the Corona Police Department, the Riverside County Gang Task Force (Region 8), and the Riverside County Post Release Accountability and Compliance Team, conducted a sex offender registration compliance check within the City of Corona. All of sex offenders residing and registered in the City of Corona were selected for contact and verification.
The purpose of this operation was to verify the information the registrant provided when he/ she registered with the Corona Police Department, to promote education and awareness for the public, and to ensure accountability and compliance of the law.
Participating personnel formed into several teams and attempted to contact the 87 sex offenders registered in the City of Corona. Out of the 87 persons registered, only 3 were found to possibly be out of compliance with the registration procedures. Detectives will conduct further investigation regarding these subjects to determine if they are out of compliance and will pursue criminal charges if warranted. No arrests were made during this operation.
If you have any questions in regards to this operation, please contact Sr. Det. Bryan Wood of the Corona Police Department at (951)279-3631.
