On Friday July 10th at approximately 3:00 P.M. the Steuben County Sheriff's Office and Angola Police Department received reports of an incident at the Wells Fargo Bank 2204 North Wayne Street Angola Indiana. Initial reports indicated that a male subject had entered the bank and made attempts to secure the front doors with a chain device. The male subject later identified as Kurt J. Hennig age 52 of East Maumee Street Angola, made demands to those inside the bank that he wanted to speak to the FBI. Hennig was carrying an object that was later discovered to contain powdery and liquid items of unknown origin. Sheriff Deputies and Angola City Police officers arrived in minutes, entered the bank and took Hennig into custody without incident. It was unknown as to why Hennig carried powdery and liquid items into the bank. The Fort Wayne Bomb Squad, Fort Wayne Fire Department EOD and the Angola Fire Department was called in to assist with the gathering, securing and identifying the unknown substances. It was later determined to be items that were not explosive or dangerous.
The Steuben County Sheriff's Office was requested to conduct the investigation by the Angola Police Department. Assisting the Sheriff's Office was Angola City Police, Fort Wayne Police EOD and K9, Fort Wayne Fire Department, Angola FIre Department, Indiana Department of Natural Resources enforcement division and the Wells Fargo Security division.
Hennig was taken to the Steuben County Jail and was preliminarily charged with a class A misdemeanor of criminal Trespassing. He is currently held at the Steuben County jail on a $2,500.00 bond. The case remains under investigation by Sheriff's Office Detectives. A complete investigation will be sent to the Steuben County Prosecutor for review of possible additional charges.
Any Criminal charge is merely an accusation. The defendant is presumed innocent until and unless proven guilty.
