Riley Fire Department Responds to Overnight Fire
Riley Fire Department responded to a fire at a residence yesterday evening at 8:41 pm. Upon arrival at 8:45 pm, firefighters found the master bedroom of 6154 Sandstone Ct. heavily involved in fire. Thankfully, none of the occupants were home at the time of the fire. The fire was first noticed by a neighbor who called 911. Firefighters contained the fire to the room of origin in 15 minutes. Investigation into the cause revealed that a candle was inadvertently left burning when the occupants left the residence. The candle appears to have ignited a nearby curtain which caused the fire to spread throughout the bedroom. Honey Creek and Sugar Creek Fire Departments along with the Vigo County Sheriff’s Office assisted with the fire. Even though the fire was contained to the bedroom, the mobile home is considered a total loss. An adult and two children were displaced by the fire. The American Red Cross is assisting the family with clothing and shelter at this time.
Firefighters would like to remind everyone that a candle is an open flame and will easily ignite anything that burns. It is important to ensure that all candles are kept a minimum of 12 inches away from anything that will burn and ensure that all candles are extinguished prior to leaving your residence.
