Indiana State Police Conducting “Operation Centipede” Campaign

Clark County-Since June 1, 2015, troopers at the Sellersburg Post of the Indiana State Police have been working a special traffic patrol project named “Operation Centipede.” The special traffic patrols are the result of a recent study by Purdue University’s Center for Road Safety and Encompass. The study identified the most dangerous roadways in Indiana from 2010-2012. The study was done statewide and identified fifty three stretches of roadway in eighteen counties, in which there was 418 alcohol-related crashes. While identifying the dangerous stretches of roadway the study was also able to capture the actual days of the week and times of the day that the crashes occurred. This was instrumental in allowing troopers to concentrate their patrols and checkpoints to increase crash reduction efforts involving motor vehicles, motorcycles and semi-tractors and trailers.

Two locations have been identified in Clark County on Interstate #65. The first location is Interstate #65 between the .06 Mile Marker and the 2.4 Mile Marker on the north bound side. The second location is Interstate #65 between the 10.0 Mile Marker and the 16.0 Mile Marker north bound.

As usual troopers have been using a zero tolerance policy regarding impaired driving, passenger restraint, graduated drivers license, and all motorcycle violations. It is believed that strict enforcement of these violations and the high visibility of troopers, will cause voluntary compliance and will therefore have a positive impact on the number of personal injury and fatal crashes.

The increased enforcement period began on June 1, 2015 and will conclude on August 1, 2015.
