Severe Weather Forecast Across the State; Here’s How Hoosiers Can Prepare
The Indiana Department of Homeland Security reminds Hoosiers to practice safety as the state braces for another round of severe weather that could bring strong storms to most of the state.
The National Weather Service has reported that much of Indiana will face an enhanced to moderate risk for severe weather, with a slight risk for northeastern Indiana. The main threats with these storms will be damaging winds, large hail, dangerous lightning, tornadoes and flash flooding. The State Emergency Operations Center continues to monitor the weather situation, as well as assist counties as local officials prepare and respond to weather-related issues throughout the state.
If possible, prepare for severe weather and flooding in advance. Planning and preparation can help minimize flood-related deaths, injuries and property damage. All citizens should create and practice an emergency plan with their families and build an emergency kit, which includes enough food, water, medication and other essentials to take care of family members for at least three days.
Some of these severe storms may occur rapidly. As such, it is important to take precautions in advance of severe weather, in the event that immediate action is needed.
• Have an all-hazards weather radio nearby during daily activities. Keep the weather radio turned on at a volume loud enough that alerts can be over day-to-day activities. Alerts could provide important details about severe weather, with safety precautions to follow.
• Know where to take shelter in the event of severe weather. Residents living in manufactured housing should identify another location to take shelter.
• Consider turning up the volume on cell phone notifications. Be familiar with the notification settings of weather apps.
• Keep all electronic devices fully charged in case of a power outage.
In areas where flooding is already underway:
· Do not walk or drive through any flooded areas – it takes only six inches of fast-moving flood water to knock over an adult and only two feet to move a vehicle. If a road is closed, find another route.
· Follow the directions of public safety officials – that includes evacuation orders, road closures or requests to stay at home or stay away from certain areas; public safety officials give orders for public well-being. Follow their guidance.
· Pay attention to signage.
Weather conditions can escalate quickly, so it’s important to stay up to date on current weather conditions. Follow local TV and radio station reports or visit www.weather.gov.
