Crash sends Warsaw Police Officer to Hospital

Kosciusko County – The Indiana State Police are investigating a crash from Monday night that sent a Warsaw police officer to the hospital.  The accident happened at the intersection of East Center Street and Eastlake Drive in Warsaw shortly before 9:00 p.m.

State police arrived on the scene to find a 2007 Cadillac that had collided with the side of 2013 Warsaw police car.

Witnesses at the scene stated that the driver of the Cadillac, Patricia Hammons, 57, of North Manchester, ran a red traffic light before striking the Warsaw police car in the middle of the intersection.  The impact from the crash caused the driver’s side air bags to deploy in the police car.  Hammons had been driving east bound on East Center Street.

The driver of the police car, Sgt. Clay Layne, 46, was turning west onto East Center Street from East Lake Drive just prior to being struck.  Layne was on normal patrol duty at the time.

Layne was transported to Lutheran Hospital in Ft. Wayne for his injuries.  He was treated for neck pain and later released.  Hammons was not injured in the crash.

Hammons was cited for disregarding an automatic signal.  Alcohol was not a factor in the crash.
