Livermore Police Department is proud to announce our new Area Policing Model-
The Six Pillars of the Livermore Police Department were developed to identify our values, priorities and desired outcomes. To learn more about The Six Pillars go to http://www.cityoflivermore.net/cityg…/police/admin/chief.asp
One of the key strategies that aligns with each of the Six Pillars of the Livermore Police Department and will help achieve the outcomes we desire is the Area Policing model.
The Area Policing model is not a new concept in policing. By transitioning to the Area Policing model we hope to further strengthen our community relationships and our proactive responses to neighborhood concerns.
Area Policing requires the alignment of organizational management, structure, personnel, and information systems to support community partnerships and proactive problem solving. Agencies who adopt this model typically divide the city into distinct geographic areas that are larger than the traditional police beat area. Patrol personnel are then assigned to one of the geographic area known as “Area Commands” for an extended period of time so that they can build longer lasting and more effective relationships with the community and respond proactively to the unique issues within each area.
The Livermore Police Department has transitioned to Area Policing and we have divided the City into three distinct geographic areas, identified as the Northeast Area, Northwest Area, and South Area Commands. Additionally, within each Area Command, specific neighborhoods have been identified. A Police Lieutenant has been assigned to each of the three areas as an Area Commander. All officers have been assigned to patrol one of the three Area Commands and will be “adopting” one of the neighborhoods within their Area Command. By “adopting” a specific neighborhood, Officers will be able to establish relationships with the residents they serve and work in partnership to improve the overall quality of life in each neighborhood.

Benefits of the Area Command service delivery model include:
•Increased police/citizen engagement and a strengthening of relationships with the community
•Increased autonomy and professional responsibility for staff
•Increased accountability for management
•Improved quality of life for residents
It is important to understand that the Area Command model is not a substitute for dialing 911 in an emergency. The closest available officers will still respond to emergency calls for service. Moreover, under the Area Command system all segments of our community will continue to receive the same level of police resources and service as they have in the years past.
“At its core, policing is about community service and fostering a feeling of safety and security in a community. We want to engage with the people in a meaningful way and establish relationships, rather than allowing the gap between officers and the people we serve to widen. This model will provide an opportunity for us to get to know those we serve and for them to get to know us, and that is community policing.” A quote from Police Chief Michael Harris.
Each Area Commander will be looking for opportunities to implement this model into their areas.
