LAPD Topanga Division has received a number of radio calls for kidnap/ransom investigations
Today at approximately 10:30 AM, a West Hills resident received a phone call from a Male, with a possible Hispanic accent, claiming that his daughter had been kidnapped. The suspect proceeded to tell the Victim if he wants to see his daughter again then he should respond to a local Western Union at the Walmart and wire money. The following number (999) 350-3300 appeared on Victim's caller ID. Victim contacted police and was able to verify that his daughter was not kidnapped.
Suspects are using an internet based calling system that attaches to a random telephone number and can't be traced. When you call back the phone number, it returns as a inoperable. Suspects are gambling that the Victim will pay the ransom before he or she can verify the status of the supposedly kidnap family member.
Instructions:
If you receive a similar phone call, contact the family member and verify their safety. If you can't verify the status of your family member contact 911.
