Jefferson County-Early this morning, at approximately 12:15 A.M. the Indiana State Police responded to a two vehicle crash involving a motorcycle that critically injured a Hanover man.
Initial investigation by Trooper Matt Holley indicated that a 1996 Chevrolet Blazer driven by James S. Simmonds, 44, Madison was northbound on Michigan Road and attempted to make a left hand turn onto Village Drive. Simmonds vehicle turned into the path of a southbound 2003 Kawasaki motorcycle driven by Robert S. McCarty, 36, Hanover. The vehicles collided causing McCarty to be ejected from the vehicle.
McCarty sustained multiple injuries to his head and extremities. He was transported to King’s Daughter Hospital in Madison before being flown to University of Louisville Hospital where he was listed in critical condition. The investigation indicated that McCarty was not wearing a helmet at the time of the crash which contributed to the severity of his injuries. Simmonds was uninjured in the crash.
The investigation is ongoing. Michigan Road was closed for approximately 2 ½ hours while the crash was investigated and cleared from the roadway.
Trp. Holley was assisted by Trp. Andrew Garrett, the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Department, Madison Police Department, Jefferson County EMS, Madison Township Fire Department, and M & M Towing.
