Safety Message

Attention Rutgers Community:

The Rutgers University Police Department (RUPD) operates 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, to provide the university community with a full range of police and security services. The department is committed to providing quality law enforcement and security services to enhance the quality of life for all students, employees, and visitors.

The safety of the Rutgers community is a top priority and a fundamental component of our mission as a preeminent, comprehensive public institution of higher education. The New Brunswick Police Department (NBPD) and the Middlesex County Prosecutors Office (MCPO) are actively investigating the incidents that occurred on Hamilton Street and Richardson Street on Sunday morning and the Rutgers University Police Department is working in conjunction with those agencies to assist with that effort. In addition, there will be a noticeable increase in the public safety presence within the areas of the City of New Brunswick’s 5th and 6th wards as well as on the College Avenue Campus.

At Rutgers, a comprehensive public safety system is in place that serves all members of the campus and off-campus communities. The goal of the Division of Public Safety is to work in partnership with students, faculty and staff to provide a safe, enjoyable and fulfilling university experience.

The RUPD provides escorts to students, faculty and staff upon request. The escorts provide the community with personalized service to their vehicles, campus residence or the University's mass transit system. In order to request an “escort” we ask that an individual contact the police communications center 732-932-7211 or by using any campus blue light telephone and identify their current location. In addition the Knight Mover shuttle operates Sunday – Wednesday between the hours of 3:00 am – 6:45 AM in order to provide a safe transportation option outside of the operating hours of the intercampus bus system. The Knight Mover can be requested at: 732-932-RIDE (7433).

You can help us reach our goal by following security policies and ensuring that others do not circumvent them. Using common sense safety practices such as walking in groups, reporting suspicious activity, keeping doors and windows securely locked and limiting consumption of alcohol can also reduce the opportunity for victimization. In addition, to these simple measures, the University Police Department encourages personal responsibility including (but not limited to):

 Remaining aware of your surroundings.
 Watch out for your friends, and vice versa.
 Walk with purpose. Even if you don’t know where you are going, act like you do.
 Keeping doors locked, including interior doors to rooms and suites within residence halls.
 Utilizing campus resources such as Safety Escorts, Knight Mover and University Busses.

We also ask that you trust your instincts and report unusual or suspicious behavior immediately to the University Police Department at 732-932-7211 or 9-1-1 for Emergencies. If you have any questions, concerns, or suggestions about our practices, policies, or the handling of a particular police matter, I encourage you to contact the Rutgers Police Department at: [email protected].

Sincerely,
