Valdez Police Department Weekly Press Release [August 31st - September 6th]
PRESS RELEASE FOR THE WEEK OF
August 31 - September 6, 2015

and the Defendant is presumed innocent until proven guilty.
8/31
Intoxicated Pedestrian: An intoxicated individual walked into a trailer in the Valdez Mobile Home Park and would not leave the property. Officers responded but the individual had left the residence already.
Fireworks: Officers contacted two individuals shooting fireworks at the ball field by the airport and asked them to stop for the night.
Lost Property: A wallet was lost possibly around the Small Boat Harbor. If found, please turn into the Valdez Police Department.
Animal at Large: A dog was reported at large around Chenega St. The ACO responded and chased the dog back to it’s known residence.
Suspicious Activity: Officers responded to a report of an individual trying to access vehicles parked in the parking area near the end of Dayville. Officers searched the area and spoke with others in the area but no one had any information.
Aggressive Animal: Dispatch received a report of an aggressive dog that attacked another dog being walked by a child. The attacked dog had to be treated by the vet. The Animal Control Officer spoke with all involved parties and they have come to an agreement.
Stolen Bicycle: A caller reported his bicycle stolen at night from his residence. It was found the following day around Wells Fargo.
Stolen Bicycle: A caller reported an individual just stole a bicycle from a local business. After investigation, it was determined the individual had purchased the bicycle from the business.
Suspicious Activity: Officers responded to Blueberry Hill for a report of suspicious activity. They contacted individuals carrying buckets for picking blueberries.
Burglary Alarm: Officers responded to the Teen Center for an active burglary alarm. The building was searched and no suspicious activity was found. The alarm was silenced and the building was secured.

Found Property: A wallet was found near the restrooms of the harbor. If you believe this belongs to you, contact VPD with descriptors to claim.
Public Service: Officers assisted with traffic control for Gilson Middle School’s Cross Country meet.
MVA (with Injuries): Police and EMS responded to a report of an ATV crash at the intersection of Egan Drive and Hazelet Avenue. Investigation revealed it was a single ATV rollover, injuring both adult males. Both occupants required transport to the hospital; neither were wearing a helmet.
Aggressive Animal: A caller reported a dangerous dog attacked him on Mendeltna. The ACO spoke with the caller and a witness who stated the dog also charged her. The ACO is investigating this incident.

ATV Incident: Officers advised ATV motorists not to ride on the bike path.
Harassment: A caller reported receiving threatening correspondence about the employment of an individual. This case is under investigation.
Bear Incident: A caller reported bears in her yard moving toward a neighbors home then hearing gun shots. Officers confirmed it was firecracker rounds to scare the bears away.

Animal DOA: Officers removed a dead rabbit from the roadway around Ruth Pond.
Animal Impound: A black dog with no collar was taken to the shelter after found wandering around Egan Dr.
Theft: Trevin G. Barnes, DOB 09/13/91, of Valdez, was arrested for Theft in the 3rd Degree. Barnes is currently being held at the Valdez Jail on $3,000 cash bail.
Welfare Check: Officers responded to a residence after a caller reported hearing yelling from the street while walking past the building. A male and female were contacted and reported the female was upset about having court the following day.

Traffic Hazard: A caller reported a lone dresser drawer in the highway at the Tide Flats. Officers removed the drawer.
Theft of Money: A caller reported a large sum of cash he had been hiding was stolen and that he believes he knows who did it. Officers responded and gathered evidence. This case is currently under investigation.
Animal Noise: Dispatch received a call about an ongoing barking dog noise complaint. Officers contacted the owner to put the dog inside and warned them for the disturbance.
Family Issues: A third party caller requested officer assistance for an argument that was taking place between family members. The two involved parties were not getting along so officers separated them for the night.
Missing Person: Officers assisted in looking for a missing 13 year old girl. She later returned home on her own.

Animal at Large: A dog was reported at large around the Egan and Meals area. Officers responded but were unable to locate the dog.
Parking: A caller reported 4 motorhomes were parked and blocking access to the public beach. Officers contacted the campground host who stated the motorhomes were told to park there.
Parking: Officers contacted an individual who parked his van on the bike path alongside Dayville Road and asked him to move his vehicle off the path.
Assist Medical: Officers assisted the EMS crew with an injured high school football player.
Traffic Complaint: A caller reported two vehicles drag racing inbound at the Tide Flats. Officers responded and located the vehicles at a local establishment. Officers made contact with the drivers of the vehicles and a citation was issued.

Welfare Check: Officers searched the area after receiving a report of a woman crying behind a local RV park. No descriptors were given on the woman and the officers were unable to locate anyone walking around in the area at that time.
Suspicious Vehicle: A caller requested an officer make contact with a vehicle that had circled her place of employment, left the area, then came back a few minutes later early in the morning. Officers contacted a man that was a giving another employee a ride home.
Traffic Hazard: Officers removed broken beer bottles from the roadway at East Pioneer and the Richardson Highway.
Disturbance: A caller reported a male yelling at a female inside a vehicle to let him in the locked vehicle in the parking lot of a local resturaunt. The caller also reported it looked like the disturbance had gotten physical. When officers arrived, the woman denied any sort of altercation and a disorderly conduct warning was given.
Arrested: Kyla R. Hughes, DOB 12/17/68, of Valdez, was arrested on a Bench Warrant for failing to comply with a court order.
Animal Info: An individual reported being attacked by a dog. Officers responded to the residence of the dog to speak with the owners and the complainant. It was discovered that the individual walked up to the dog while it was on a leash.
