Back To School Traffic Safety

The Davis Police Departments welcomes the new and returning students back to school! To do our part to help students arrive at school safely, we have already begun our “Adopt-a-School” program which assigns patrol officers to a particular school. These “Adopt-A-School” officers observe the traffic in and around the school, as well as identify and attempt to resolve dangerous situations they come across. In some instances violators are stopped by officers, although most of those drivers are being educated on their violation and reminded of safety concerns near schools.

Throughout the school year officers will continue to maintain a presence at the schools. While the educational process will continue, officers will also be conducting more enforcement activity as the year progresses.

The speed limit in front of schools is 25 miles per hour when children are present. During drop off and pick-up times, traffic will most likely be impacted slowing cars due to drivers making poor choices. Below are some tips on how to avoid creating congestion and making sure your students are safe when it comes to these times:

• Follow all regulatory signs. They are there for a reason; Safety. U-Turns are especially dangerous due to the number of lanes being crossed and multiple blind spots.

• Do not leave your vehicle unattended in the “3 Minute Parking” zone. When drivers leave their vehicle in these zones, they cause congestion, which causes more anxiety for other drivers.

• Pre-plan your daily trips:
o Ensure the kids are fully dressed with their book bags and projects either on the seat next to them or on the floor.
o Once you stop at the school, say quick goodbyes and have the child step out of the car to the right curb.

• Do not stop in the middle of the road to drop off your child as this causes traffic congestion and can also endanger your child or a bicyclist.

• If you want to walk your child to class, make sure you are parked in the right area, you are not blocking anyone’s driveway and you use all crosswalks.

The Davis Police Department’s Traffic Unit will continue to work closely with the schools and the officers assigned to each school. These officers will be conducting bicycle rodeos at various elementary schools and will also hold a “Teen and Parent Night” to present the Impact Teen Drivers program. This is a program that explores distracted driving issues and the graduated driver’s license programs, commonly referred to as “Provisional Licenses.” We are hoping to have this scheduled in the late fall.
