Semi Accident Spills 100 gallons of Diesel Fuel
Riley Fire Department along with the Indiana State Police responded to Interstate 70 at the 11 mile marker at 5:05pm this evening. Upon arrival units found a semi, belonging to Daum trucking of Plainfield Indiana, had struck concrete barriers in the construction zone at the new SR 46 exit ramp. When the semi struck the barriers the drivers side fuel tank ruptured and approximately 100 gallons of diesel fuel spilled into the construction ditch which was filled with water from recent rainfall. Firefighters contained the spill to an area approximately 300 feet in length and prevented the spill from entering newly constructed roadway drains.
Units remained on the scene for over two hours while the semi was removed by Edington Wrecker Service. The Indiana Department of Environmental Management was notified of the spill and was working with the trucking company to arrange clean up of the contaminated area.
Eastbound Traffic on I-70 was reduced to one lane for most of the recovery effort and both lanes were closed for a short time.
No one was injured in the accident and the Vigo County Haz Mat team assisted with the containment and confinement of the spill.
