Demotte Man Airlifted from Crash Scene
Lake County-A late morning crash involving a car and motorcycle resulted in the motorcyclist being airlifted from the interstate with multiple injuries.
Preliminary investigation by Master Trooper Mike Hemphill revealed that at approximately 11:44 a.m., this Sunday, September 13, 2015, morning, a 2013 Subaru Outback, driven by Jill Huels, 66 of Fishers was northbound on I-65 at the 242 milemarker (this is two miles north of the Lowell exit) in the right lane when Huels realized she was driving in the wrong direction. A 2015 Kawasaki motorcycle, driven by Nikol Nikolaj, 20 of Demotte, was northbound in the left lane when the Outback went from the right lane across the left lane to make a U-turn in the crossover at that location. The Outback crossed directly into the path of the Kawasaki and the motorcycle hit the driver’s side of the Outback. Nikolaj was ejected from his motorcycle and landed in the left lane.
Nikolaj who was wearing a helmet was airlifted from the scene to Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn, Illinois with broken arms, abrasions and other injuries. Family was notified.
Master Trooper Hemphill stated, “Luckily Nikol was wearing a helmet, I believe by his having a helmet on probably saved his life”.
Huels was cited for making an illegal U-turn on the interstate.
