Pursuit with Suspected Armed Robber Ends on Interstate 64
Perry County: A pursuit with an armed robbery suspect began in Corydon and ended on Interstate 64 in Perry County.
This afternoon, officers in Floyd County investigated an armed robbery in the New Albany area and believed that the suspect was driving a silver sedan. Around 7:00 P.M., the Harrison County Sheriff’s Department received a report of a person breaking into a shed in the Green Meadows Trailer Park in Corydon. Information received also believed that this was the suspect from the Floyd County investigation. A Harrison County Deputy Sheriff was moments away and responded. As he arrived, the suspect was attempting to leave the area in a silver sedan. After numerous verbal attempts to attempt to convince the suspect to stop his vehicle, the suspect fled the area, traveling on State Road 135 before going west on Interstate 64. Harrison County deputies, along with an officer with the Corydon Police, Indiana Conservation Officers, and Indiana State Police, joined in an attempt to stop the vehicle.
As the pursuit continued westbound at speeds reaching 115 miles per hour, a State Trooper attempted to deploy a tire deflation device at the 86 mile marker but was unsuccessful. The pursuit traveled through Crawford and Perry Counties, into Dubois County, where Ferdinand Police deployed tire deflation devices, flattening the front right tire. The suspect exited Interstate 64 at the 63 mile marker (Ferdinand exit), and reentered Interstate 64, now traveling east. A Harrison County deputy deployed his tire deflation device near the 72 mile marker in Perry County, flattening the remaining three tires. The suspect continued east to the 79 mile marker (Tell City exit), where he slowed down to cross the median in a paved crossover. Officers believe at this point, the suspect fired a single self-inflicted gunshot. The vehicle coasted across the westbound lanes of Interstate 64 and stopped north of the roadway.
The driver was pronounced deceased by the Perry County Coroner. The name of the driver will be released at a later time.
The incident is under investigation by detectives with Indiana State Police.
