Montcalm County Sheriff’s Office deputies are investigating a crash between a motorcycle and a cow that occurred on Sidney Road near Hillman Road. The crash happened approximately 8:25 PM on Wednesday, September 16, 2015.
The investigation found that Mark Olmstead, age 57 from Stanton, was headed east on Sidney Road on his 2006 Harley Davidson motorcycle when he struck a black cow that had entered the roadway. Witnesses reported seeing the cow and chased it from the road but the cow re-entered the roadway and was struck before the witnesses had a chance to return to their vehicle.
Mr. Olmstead sustained multiple injuries and was flown to Spectrum in Grand Rapids by Aeromed. Mr. Olmstead is reported to be in stable condition and he was not wearing a helmet at the time of the crash.
Dennis Baese of Elsie was the owner of the cow, he had been made aware it was out of its pen, and he was headed to the area to recover it at the time of the crash. The cow died as a result of being struck by the motorcycle.
Montcalm County Emergency Medical Services, Aeromed, and the Sheridan Fire Department assisted at the scene. The investigation remains under investigation.
