BEACH AND OUT OF HARBORS AND MARINAS.
TSUNAMI ADVISORIES MEAN THAT A TSUNAMI CAPABLE OF PRODUCING STRONG CURRENTS OR WAVES DANGEROUS TO PERSONS IN OR VERY NEAR THE WATER IS EXPECTED OR IS ALREADY OCCURRING. AREAS IN THE ADVISORY SHOULD NOT EXPECT WIDESPREAD INUNDATION. TSUNAMIS ARE A SERIES OF WAVES DANGEROUS MANY HOURS AFTER INITIAL ARRIVAL TIME. THE FIRST WAVE MAY NOT BE THE LARGEST.
AT 355 PM PACIFIC DAYLIGHT TIME ON SEPTEMBER 16 AN EARTHQUAKE WITH PRELIMINARY MAGNITUDE 8.3 OCCURRED
OFF THE COAST OF CENTRAL CHILE.

* UPDATES...THE TSUNAMI WAVES HAVE BEEN OBSERVED ON TIDE GAUGE OBSERVATIONS UP AND DOWN THE COAST...INDICATING WATER LEVEL CHANGES OF AROUND A FOOT SO FAR. THE MAXIMUM WATER LEVEL CHANGE WAS AT VENTURA HARBOR WHERE THE GAUGE OBSERVED A CHANGE OF AROUND 13 INCHES. SANTA BARBARA REPORTED A CHANGE OF 8.5 INCHES...SANTA MONICA 8 INCHES AND PORT SAN LUIS 7.5 INCHES.
WATER SURGES HAVE ALSO BEEN REPORTED IN VENTURA HARBOR. THESE CHANGES IN WATER LEVELS ARE EXPECTED TO CONTINUE FOR AT LEAST THE NEXT 6 TO 8 HOURS.
* LOCAL IMPACTS... A TSUNAMI CAPABLE OF PRODUCING STRONG CURRENTS THAT MAY BE HAZARDOUS TO SWIMMERS...BOATS...AND COASTAL STRUCTURES IS EXPECTED. AREAS WITHIN THE ADVISORY SHOULD NOT EXPECT WIDESPREAD INUNDATION. HOWEVER...THERE IS THE POTENTIAL FOR STRONG CURRENTS IN HARBORS AND MARINAS.
