WPD advising of recent scam activity and looking for assistance identifying a vehicle used in a recent vandalism.
A local resident was contacted recently by telephone in the very early hours and notified they were in arrears to the IRS and owed a substantial amount of money and a suit was being intiated. The resident was eventually told to get a moneygram and meet someone at Shaw's to transfer the check.
All residents should be aware that no legal entity will conduct business by telephone and in secret. All communications are conducted in writing and records of transactions will be done by checks, credit cards or other traceable methods. If you get a call from someone saying they are the IRS stating you owe money, a Court and there is a warrant for you for not showing up for jury duty, a police department indicating a loved one is injured or needs bail money, etc., DO NOT provide the caller any personal information. Ask for a call back number or location and immediately report it to your local law enforcement agency.
