Gene L. Wriggelsworth - Senate Bill 218 - Line of Duty Death Benefits
With the recent line of duty deaths of Lansing Firefighter Dennis Rodeman, Deputy Grant Whitaker of the Ingham County Sheriff’s Office and Trooper Chad Wolf of the Michigan State Police, Senate Bill 218 should be on the mind of all our legislators.
Most people assume when our first responders are killed keeping them safe that their families are taken care of. Nothing could be further from the truth! In most cases their health benefits stop at time of death. This compounds the problems for a family who just lost their spouse with the burden of how to provide health care for the survivors.
Only 3 agencies state wide provide benefits after a line of duty death. THIS NEEDS TO BE CHANGED; Senate Bill 218 would do exactly that.
This bill passed the house last year unanimously, for some reason the Senate has stalled this important legislation.
