National Take Back Initiative - Drop off unwanted/unused medications at the Montclair Police Department Sat, Sep 26.
On September 26th from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. the Montclair Police Department will be partnering with the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) for the tenth National Take Back Initiative. The program serves to prevent pill abuse and theft by ridding their homes of potentially dangerous expired, unused, and unwanted prescription drugs. Bring your medications for disposal to the Montclair Police Department at 4870 Arrow Hwy, Montclair CA 91763. The service is free and anonymous, no questions asked.
In the previous nine Take Back events nationwide from 2010 - 2014, 4,823,251 pounds, or 2,411 tons of drugs were collected. This initiative addresses a vital public safety and public health issue. Medicines that languish in home cabinets are highly susceptible to diversion, misuse, and abuse. Rates of prescription drug abuse in the U.S. are alarmingly high, as are the number of accidental poisonings and overdoses due to these drugs. Studies show that a majority of abused prescription drugs are obtained from family and friends, including from the home medicine cabinet. In addition, Americans are now advised that their usual methods for disposing of unused medicines—flushing them down the toilet or throwing them in the trash—both pose potential safety and health hazards.
Those wishing to dispose of expired, unused, and/or unwanted prescription drugs may bring them to a medication drop-box, located at the front of the Montclair Police Department. In addition to participation in the National Take Back Initiative on Saturday April 26th, the Montclair Police Department now has a permanent pill drop box. Anyone wishing to drop off any unused medications may do so at any time. This program is anonymous and all efforts will be made to protect the anonymity of individuals disposing of medications. No questions or requests for information will be made. **Intravenous solutions, injectibles, and syringes will not be accepted due to potential hazard posed by blood borne pathogens.**
