Huron Township Police ask elementary school students to name new K9 dog

A new K9 unit will soon be in full operation within Huron Township and the department is asking local elementary school students for help with naming the new partner.

“One of the core values of the Huron Township Police Department is Community Partnerships. With that in mind, we would like to partner with the elementary children of Huron Township to help us pick the name of our new K9 partner,” said Police Chief Everette Robbins.

Robbins is inviting all elementary classes in Huron Township to submit five name choices for the new police dog by Oct. 7.

The department is asking for each school in Huron to create a list — by class — of submitted names to be emailed to the Chief.

The winning name will be chosen by K9 Officer Ken Hickman, who will visit the winning class — along with the newly named K9 — in the spring.

A representative of the winning class will also be invited to attend the Oct. 14 board of trustees meeting to reveal the name of the K9 partner.

In the case that multiple classes pick the winning name, a student’s name will be pulled from a hat by Renton Middle School Principal Kurt Mrocko.

“We are excited to include our wonderful elementary schools and their children in this exciting addition to our department. We hope that all of our elementary schools will participate,” Robbins said.

The newly announced K9 unit was approved by the board of trustees at the Sept. 23 meeting.

Huron Township Police Chief Everette Robbins is letting his department go to the dogs, and he’s asking the community for help with it.

Robbins put out a call for all of the elementary schools in the township to pick a name for the K9 unit that will be joining the department in the next few weeks.

“I’ve always wanted to have a police dog,” he said. “We’ve scraped and saved for a while and now we can add that service to our department.”

The new dog, which will be partnered with officer Ken Hickman, will be named through a contest. Robbins is hoping that the elementary classes in the parochial schools, Huron Public Schools and Summit Academy Schools will all participate in the contest.

Every elementary class is invited to submit up to five names for consideration by Oct. 7.

“It’s a short timeframe,” Robbins said, “but the teachers are with their students every day. We want to have a name when we pick up the new dog.”

Hickman will choose the name.

The class that submits the winning name will get a visit from Hickman and his new partner. In the event that more than one class submits the winning name, the contest winner will be drawn from a hat.

Representatives from the winning class will also be invited to the Oct. 14 township board meeting to officially reveal the new officer’s name.

“We’re hoping that all of our elementary schools will participate,” Robbins said.

One of the things Robbins has worked to do since taking over as the top cop more than a year ago is to increase community relations. He said he hopes to be able to do that even more with the new canine officer.

Last year the department launched a horseback mounted unit that is manned by reserve officers. Those officers have patrolled at parades, high school football games and during other community events.
