State, County, and Township personnel are continuously monitoring Hurricane Joaquin and the potential impact to our area.

There is still HIGH VARIABILITY on the track of Joaquin, attached is the latest track from the Hurricane Center overlaid with the rainfall forecast through Sunday. If the track shifts west that means more rain and wind for our region starting Saturday Night into Monday. Currently, the Hempfield area can expect a possibility of 2"+ of rainfall and periods of wind gusts of 35 mph or greater.

Presently no warnings or watches have been issued. A flood watch means that flooding may occur. Residents should stay alert and watch rivers and streams, and be prepared to move to high ground quickly. A flood warning means that there is actual flooding. Residents should act at once and move to high ground

Remember to "Turn Around, Don't Drown." Please, if you experience road closed barricades during your travels due to flooding, DO NOT go around them. Over half of all flood-related drownings occur when a vehicle is driven into hazardous flood water. The next highest percentage of flood-related deaths is due to walking into or near flood waters. People underestimate the force and power of water. Roadways may appear passable, but conditions can change rapidly. Just 6 inches of fast-moving flood water can knock over an adult. It takes just 12 inches of rushing water to carry away a small car, while 2 feet of rushing water can carry away most vehicles. It is NEVER safe to drive or walk into flood waters.
