Deputies help diver after SCUBA diving accident - Please be more aware this Spiny Lobster Season
On October 14, 2015 at approximately 1200 hours, a 38 year old male SCUBA diver with over 20 years of diving experience was rushed by private boat to Marina del Rey Sheriff’s Station for a dive related emergency. The diver was hunting spiny lobster with friends in the Santa Monica Bay in over 90 feet of water. During the dive, the Ventura County resident realized he was out of air and started a dangerously rapid ascent to the surface.
Once at the Sheriff’s station, the diver was treated by Marine Patrol deputies and paramedics from the Los Angeles County Fire Department for symptoms of a dive related injury. Due to the dangerous nature of dive injuries, the man was transported via ambulance to the Marina del Rey public launch ramp parking lot where he was transferred to an awaiting Los Angeles County Fire Department rescue helicopter. He was flown to UCLA Medical Center for advanced treatment.
This marks the second dive emergency requiring a medical evacuation by helicopter in the Marina del Rey area since the opening of lobster season on October 3rd, 2015.
The Marina del Rey Marine Patrol Unit and the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department would like to remind all divers following essential safety tips:
· Have a medical assessment by a doctor before diving
· Always dive with a buddy, and leave details of your dive trip with someone ashore who will report you overdue if you run into trouble
· Plan your dive, follow your plan, and provide your emergency plan to someone on shore
· Only conduct dives that match your training, experience, and fitness level
· Have a certified professional service your equipment yearly
· Constantly monitor your own, and your buddy’s air usage
· Remember that no lobster is worth a human life
