Chula Vista Fire Dept encourages everyone to show support for the Movember campaign bringing awareness to men's health.
This November we once again encourage everyone to show support for the Movember campaign bringing awareness to men's health. On average, Firefighters are exposed to a much higher level of carcinogens and dangerous chemicals and thusly are disproportionally diagnosed with prostate and testicular cancers, as well as skin and many other cancers. Approximately 1 in 7 men will be diagnosed with prostate cancer and that rate is increasing. Mental health has been a taboo subject for men for some time and the Movember Foundation is looking to end that.
How can you participate? I'm glad you asked.
1. Buy a shirt. (www.booster.com/cvfdmovembermain)
We will be selling shirts online for you, your family and friends through October 21st. They are $15, awesome and yes, they even have a pocket! Keep in mind that next year we will be only selling pink shirts for October so buy enough to get you through next November, too. We donate the proceeds of the shirts so share the link with everybody, put it on Facebook, Tweet it, whatever it takes.
2. Grow a moustache.
Technically for a true Movember moustache you are supposed to shave the night of 10/31 and grow for the entire month but since we aren't having a competition any mo' will do. Want a head start? Cool. Want to keep what you have? Do it. Or, have a friendly contest with a co-worker or anybody for that matter. Check the Movember website for Shave The Date locations.
3. Register on the Movember site. (us.movember.com)
Share the link. There's a ton of information about events, men's health, Mo' gear and people can donate directly if they like.
4. Educate yourself.
In our professions we can be exposed to bad things, both mentally and physically. We all know that. But what we may not know (or like to think about) are the long-term effects and things we can do to limit our chances and live long, healthy lives. Not just for us, but everyone out there. Explore and share these links with anyone you care about and let's help put the word out
